U.S. Military Heraldry was born from a simple desire to share the contents of my military insignia collection. The goal is for this blog to be much more than a gallery, however, by providing a bit of the history behind each item as well as breaking down the actual costs I incur keeping this hobby of mine afloat.

Yours truly, back in the day |
I do not claim to be an expert on military insignia collecting. In fact, this hobby is relatively new to me. Heraldry has always been an interest of mine, though, and while I took the opportunity to photograph insignia as often as I could during my time in the Air Force, the actual collecting of patches and DUI began within the last couple of years. Still, I'm a history buff and avid researcher so I hope my ramblings will provide some value for the collecting community.
It is very important in this hobby to focus your collection on a limited number of interest areas, unless of course you are a millionaire still living with your parents. Since I most definitely do not meet either of those conditions, I try very hard - with questionable success - to limit my attention to the following:
- WWII to modern-era cavalry units
- Army aviation units
- USAF reconnaissance and communications units
- Units of the Kentucky National Guard and Air National Guard
In the above categories, I stick to color versions of SSI and pocket patches. The heraldry of the units is what interests me most, so the subdued tones of ACU, DCU, and other such variations "subdues" their appeal to me.
All items pictured here are from my personal collection and are
not for sale or trade. I can be found lurking on the boards at
usafpatch.us and
U.S. Militaria Forum as
ky_wolverine.
